The second International Symposium on the geo-ecological survey of the global black soil
critical zone successfully concluded in Harbin
The 2nd International Symposium on Global Black soil Critical Zone Geo-ecological
Survey(BASGES) and the Annual Summary Meeting of IGCP-665 Work Project were successfully
held in Harbin. The scientific problems of Global Black soil Critical Zone Geo-ecological
Survey were discussed in depth. The work of IGCP in the past year was summarized, and the
work deployment for the next year was arranged. The next step is clear.
At the meeting, Li Zhizhong, director of Shenyang Geological Survey, China Geological
Survey, Ministry of Natural Resources of the People’s Republic of China, welcomed the
arrival of experts from all over the world. He stressed that black soil is the most
precious soil resource in the world. There are only four black soil regions in the world.
They are all important food producing areas in their countries and have an important impact
on global climate change. In the future, we should carry out the geo-ecological survey of
the global black soil critical zone by the "3M" method of the earth critical zone, through
IGCP project organization and implementation, strengthen cooperation to achieve a new
breakthrough in black land investigation and research.

academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, were invited to attend the meeting.
They made brilliant speeches on the significance and future development of geo-ecological
survey in the black soil critical zone, respectively. At the same time, he highly affirmed
the current achievements. At the meeting, the Black soil Research Center of the China
Geological Survey was unveiled and established. On behalf of the research center, Director
Li Zhizhong hired Academician Peng Suping as the director of the Academic Committee and
Chairman Cheng Qiuming as the director of the Advisory Committee and issued the letter of appointment.

During the meeting, Dr. Wang Daming reported and summarized many important progress made
since IGCP-665 project was approved.
1. China – Czech project
In July 2018, we applied for the China-Czech Regular Scientific and Technological Meeting Exchange Project,
named "Orbiting Satellite Soil Mapping and Monitoring". The main content of cooperation
is that the two sides jointly carry out research work on soil quality information inversion, mapping and
monitoring based on orbital satellite data.
2. CGS project
Continue integrated geological survey in Northeast China in 2018. At present, 44 960 square kilometers of
1:250,000 geochemical survey, 100,000 square kilometers of satellite remote sensing survey and 1500 square
kilometers of aerial hyperspectral survey have been completed.
The International Blackland Association has signed letters of intent for cooperation with several national
research organizations. At present, seven research organizations have signed letters of intent for cooperation,
and four research organizations are signing letters of intent.
4. INBS collaboration

Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

6. Social activities in Northeast China
By using the results of land quality geochemical survey of our center, we have planned and built a natural green selenium-enriched
rice demonstration base in Changfa Town, and successfully built the reputation of “Longjiang Selenium First Village”. In 2017,
Changhua Village sold 83 tons of natural selenium-enriched rice, which was higher than the market price of 3.6 yuan/kg.
We have also constructed a demonstration farmland for selenium-enriched rice planting in Dongliao County, and a traceability management
system for the geo-ecological environment of the northeast specialty agricultural products. The origin of agricultural products can be
obtained through a QR code on the product packaging, through which consumers can inquire about agricultural soil types, soil organic matter, nutrients, beneficial elements and heavy metal pollution information services.
7. Background data collection and atlas
We collected data from Geochemical and Mineralogical Surveys by USGS, Multi-purpose Geochemical Surveys by SGS, GEMAS by EuroGeoSurvey, WEGS, FOREGS. We also collected remote sensing survey data from Land Remote Sensing
Program by USGS, World Soil Spectrum Lib by CSIRO and Space-Air-Ground RS Survey by SGS.
An atlas has been mapped based on these background data. The Atlas is divided into three scales: global scale (46°N black soil area), regional scale, local scale. The contents include Ecological related maps of soil types,
land use changes, surface vegetation cover, and carbon emissions in the global black soil region, Ecologically relevant maps such as regional scale temperature, primary productivity, and precipitation, Ecological related
maps of Sanjiang Plain, Helen, Baoqing, and Qixing Farm.
8. BASGES / IGCP 665 research plan

Experts from the United States, Russia, Czech and the United Kingdom participated in the meeting, and conducted
in-depth exchanges and discussions on eight research directions of remote sensing application, geochemical
application and sharing platform construction in geological and ecological survey of black soil critical zones.
